Welcome to Clay's Restaurant! We wish you all could have eaten here with us today! What a wonderful, fun, family-friendly place this is to eat and play. Clay's Restaurant in located in northern Houston and is a rustic hamburger joint. The food is moderately priced and the environment is ultra-casual. The big draw at Clay's is their big 'backyard.' It is full of animals! Today they were featuring one donkey, several horses, two goats, and two chickens. However, I'm told that on different days you might encounter sheep, ducks, and the occasional turkey. Nick and I each had a hamburger (which we ate at a table outdoors.) Nathan was a little too excited to eat, and I think you will see why!
Nathan peers into the pen holding the goats. These two goats were the most friendly I've ever met. They would regularly come over to the gate and stick their heads completely through. Maybe they get fed the occasional french fry and are just hoping for a handout. Nonetheless, their outgoing spirit makes them a hoot for the kiddos.
This is where we spent the rest of our time. Nathan kept saying 'Oof oof', perhaps assuming the horses were Duke's breed?? Anyways, I was really surprised at how much Nathan loved the horses. Can I touch him, Daddy?
Nathan loved being right up close to the horse. He is certainly not animal-shy! He was particularly taken with the soft nose of the horse...you know, they do have kinda funny feeling lips. I don't particularly like to touch them, but Daddy was just the guy for the job.
And Nathan's very favorite part of the day: Feeding the horse!
The restaurant had a little vending machine which sold Dixie cups of horse feed for a quarter. We ran out of quarters long before Nathan lost interest. A handful at a time he would offer these little munchies to the horse and then squeal with delight as that big tongue licked them off his hands. One horse was so hungry he ate the actual Dixie cup when it was emptied. Nathan thought that was hysterical. I was a little concerned about the horse digesting the cup, but fortunately do not plan to be around when that cup finally works its way through the animal's system. At any rate, I know there are numerous Grandparents who would have loved to watch little Nathan at play as well as a few cousins who would have enthusiastically joined in. The horse gave Nathan some kisses for all of you!

Did you remember to wash your hands after petting the animals? According to the CDC, petting zoos and eating without hand washing is the leading cause of illnesses associated with petting zoos.

Anyhow, it sure looks like Nathan was having fun. I missed the picture of Nick, kissing the animals, like when he was in Africa with the giraffe.

I love the pictures and the place! How fun! His little cousins (aka my kids) would have been right there beside him the entire time. What a great place to eat!
