Earth to Earth,
Ashes to Ashes,
Dust to Dust...

We post this tombstone in honor of our beloved Boots, who, due to the kitty-cat form of SIDS is no longer with us. We knew him only a brief time, but we loved him all the same. A moment of silence for our little Boots...

The death of a shelter animal is relatively common, and as such wasn't terribly surprising. Oh well. I am over the loss completely. Nick was just grossed out at the thought of a dead cat. Nathan didn't notice that the 'mow mow' in his house miraculously changed color and size around 5pm when we traded in our corpse for a different, live kitten. Just in case you all are thinking that we are delinquent pet owners to have this cat die, she came from a litter that has already lost a few siblings, and the workers at BARC assured us they were neither taken aback nor concerned about our animal care abilities. I guess that is good news. So, without further contemplation of this morbid topic, meet Valencia:

Valencia has beautiful orange and white fur. I told Nick that I thought we should name her (yes, this one is a girl) "Orange and Cream Frappuccino" after a new Starbucks beverage. That was voted off the island because it was a mouthful. Valencia is a discontinued Starbucks syrup (tastes like orange only REALLY sweet). I offered this as my second option. Nick took the bait, so Valencia it is.

See, this kitten is further past the 'baby' stage than Boots (RIP) was. She is also a lot more playful and independent. What remains to be seen, however, is if she can learn to get along with Duke. Today a round of unfriendly hissing and batting of the paws accompanied the meet-and-greet with Duke. Some cats aren't dog lovers. We'll see if she can get used to the idea or not. In my book, Duke is still ahead of Valencia in terms of 'keepability', so we'll try not to get terribly attached in case of another untimely death or this cat's inability to bond with our Dane. Cats! I knew they were inferior to dogs. I've had just about enough of them already!

Good grief! I had just read about Boots this afternoon! I am behind in my reading ... well bless his little heart anyway -- I like the tombstone very much -- where on earth did you find it? Is this your picture or is it a joke?

Valencia is very pretty. She looks like one of those cats who knows her mind! Never a dull moment with pets and/or toddlers!
