Proving to be heartier than Boots, Valencia is still kicking tonight after spending the majority of two days with us. Phew! I think she was greatly relieved, too. I whispered in her ear yesterday that during the entirety of my life I'd only owned one cat, and that he had only made it two days. She was scared purrless. Today we've made leaps and bounds in the bonding department. Valencia has taken a particular liking (why, I do not know) to Nathan. They spent most of the day playing together: Nathan holding Valencia in positions which most cats could not easily manipulate...at least not without breaking something. Nonetheless, she tags along with the toddler and seems to enjoy this rough-n-tough play. Nathan certainly finds her entertaining, and thus, Nick and I were able to enjoy dinner together alone at the table. Nathan couldn't be persuaded to leave the cat and eat until she hid underneath the La-Z-Boy. With the cat out of reach, he came and ate his chicken pot pie.
Nathan carefully investigated Valencia's paws. I don't know why they interested him...dogs have paws, too. But he closely examined the pads on her paws today. She doesn't look particularly pleased with this game...it wasn't too stimulating for her. Speaking of stimulation, we bought one of those sticks with a little fake mouse at the end...a cat toy. Nathan tried to desperately to use it, but Valencia wasn't thrilled at the repeated beatings she received when Nathan misjudged his distance and whacked her. I guess this would be overstimulating. Or, at the very least, we could call it downright painful.
Look how nicely she tolerates Nathan's loving! They are the best of buds. In fact, Nathan just about lost it any time another human in his house attempted to touch, feed, or make eye contact with HIS cat. When I took Valencia into the bathroom to use the litter box, he threw a full-out tantrum. I explained that cat needed 30 seconds to use the potty, but separation anxiety still got the best of Nathan. Tonight Nick is working on installing a pet door that will lead out to our patio. We will be able to keep the litter box outside and away from Nathan's reach with this new method. I think the cat will eventually learn to retreat to the patio--Nathan cannot squeeze through the pet door....he's just too big.
Best buddies. Nick announced today that Nathan had found a friend for life...make that around 10 years...or whatever the life expectancy for a cat is. I can guarantee that tomorrow, like today, Nathan will race out of his room after he wakes up in the morning and go looking for his kitty. I've been tossed aside as old news...not nearly as entertaining as our feline...and that is just fine with me. For as long as it lasts, I will be content to sit on the couch with a good book and oversee the fun that carries on without my involvement. Their is splendor in that which is new and novel. May the joy last a long time!

These pictures are adorable and priceless ... so sweet. I'm so glad Nathan can play with a new friend and give his parents a little break! :)
